What is Barium Carbonate?

  • Home

Barium carbonate is produced from barium sulfide either by treating it with soda ash at 60 to 70 degrees, with sodium carbonate, or by passing carbon dioxide at 40 to 90 degrees.

Usage Areas of Barium Carbonate, Barium Carbonate is used in many sectors. Some of them are: Optical glass, magnetic materials, barium salts, ceramics, enamel, fireworks, ceramic coatings, bricks, tiles, frit are widely used in making.

99% pure barium carbonate is used in the ceramics industry. Besides its low melting and high boiling properties, it is added to the mud recipe at 1-2% to dissolve soluble salts (calcium sulfide and magnesium sulfate) that cause blooming.

In addition, in ceramic glazes, Barium Carbonate is added to the glaze formulation in matt glaze production and barium satin surface and acid resistant matte glaze is produced.

It is also widely used in frit production, and features such as surface quality, surface tension, viscosity and expansion coefficient of the produced frit are utilized.

Since barium carbonate is a toxic raw material, it is included in the Dangerous Raw Materials group (with IMO) and during its transportation, transportation companies incur extra costs for this reason.

It is also a raw material that needs attention during transportation and storage.

Barium production in our country is almost non-existent. Therefore, a large part of the Barium need is imported from many countries, especially from China, which means a serious loss of foreign currency. The use of the ceramic industry is approximately 9.000-1.100 tons/year.

Barium Carbonate (Charcoal) is produced by petcoke with natural barium sulfate carbon dioxide and reducing by precipitation below.
